Drawings/sketchbook

I’ve done drawings in sketchbooks for years. In the last few years my sketchbooks have become more and more a record of events, places I’ve gone, things I’ve seen. Some of the drawings become the inspiration for prints and some are just pictures in a sketchbook where I record the passage of time.

I saw this roseate spoonbill at Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, TX. I was hanging out in the aviary, as was the spoonbill. We were both leaning into it.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area – An enchanted place, indeed. It’s a huge granite batholith in the hill country of Texas. I want to go back and camp there so I can see it at night. We were just there for a day trip. Great hiking place.

Huisache (Sweet Acacia?) trees are the early bloomers here in South Texas. I’ve tried drawing them for the past two years and haven’t been able to do them justice. These live at Estero Llano Grande St. Park.

Groundhog Day doesn’t mean much here in subtropical Texas. But I grew up in Indiana where winter was long enough to get tired of it. Groundhog Day was a time to think about the coming of spring. I still like the holiday. How many countries have a holiday for a large rodent, I wonder?

Ruffed Lemurs – The Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, TX, is a fun place to draw. These lemurs were not amused.

I like to watch the changes in the sky over our backyard. This was an especially pretty evening.

I sometimes draw stuff from my garden. These beans turn beautiful tan and pink colors as they dry

I sometimes draw stuff on my desk. Why not?

Alice’s back porch, Brownsville, TX, December 2017

Alice’s back porch has always been a pleasant, relaxing place to be. This is in a little landscape format sketchbook. The whole image is 11″ x 3 1/2″

Prickly Pear cacti bloom in the spring around Aprilish. This is a drawing from about 5 years ago.

I don’t know what kind of palm this is but it was blooming in May at the nature park near my home.
